Our History

In the early 1980s, George Hayes, then a school superintendent, frequently shared his vision of establishing a scholarship program for graduates of Decatur County Community Schools, specifically North and South Decatur High Schools. Recognizing the value of this idea, several community members expressed their support. In August 1983, George convened a meeting with seven school district individuals to explore this project's feasibility.

September 1983: A retired university president was hired to coach fundraising efforts.

October 1983: The foundation's plans and application for 501(c)(3) status were completed. The foundation also applied to the state for approval to allow donors contributing $100 or more to deduct half of their donation from their state tax bill.

November 1983: Each board member donated to the foundation. A dinner was hosted for attorneys to explain the foundation's mission and activities.

January 1984: A dinner was organized for community workers. The objective was to ensure that someone visited every home in the Decatur County Community Schools district to inform residents of the mission and raise funds.

February 1984: The initial fundraising drive commenced. The board met weekly to track progress and encourage donations. During this drive, over $125,000 was raised.

A portion of these funds was used to award the first four scholarships that year. The remaining funds were invested, with only the interest being used for future scholarships.
